Asturias Campaign

September 1-October 21, 1937

Final phase of Nationalist campaigns designed at the conquest of the Northern Republican territory that had begun with the reduction of the Basques. Though initially able to resist the Nationalists and Italians in bitter mountain contests, the Asturians, and their Santandarista and Basque allies were ultimatley overwhelmed and the Republican forces were routed. Though the bulk of Nationalist forces were now freed for use elsewhere, large guerilla bands continued to plague Nationalists and necessitate placing troops in this region for some months afterward. Guerilla activity continued even after the war in some places [Santa Cruz].
