Battle of La Granja

May 30 - June 3, 1937

Diversionary attack to relieve pressure on Basque front, Republican forces broke through Nationalist lines at San Ildefonso, reaching as far as La Granja before Nationalist counterthrust retook all of lost territory. Offensive delayed conquest of Basque provinces by only two weeks as Nationalists were forced to divert aircraft for counterattack. Republicans lost 1460 men (inc 360 Franco-Belgians from Commune de Paris Battalion). Nationalists lost 1100 men [Santa Cruz].
