Moroccan Regulars (aka Fuerzas Regulares Indígenas)
Recruited in Morocco and officered by Spaniards, the Regulares
were all volunteers, brave to the point of fearlessness, and represented
the best troops on the Nationalist side. Though recruitment in Morocco
continued throughout the war, the Regulares took heavy losses in
the battles for Madrid, decimating their ranks. These troops possess
excellent stealth capabilities their ascribed ability to use so
called "dead ground".

- Corporal, Machineguns company, in service uniform
- Private in summer field uniform
Note the use of Fez ("tarbouchs") and turbans ("rexa")
as main head garments. Also very characteristic is the wide
belt or Faja, carried under the leather belt.
These troops frequently used other moorish garments such
as the "chilaba", a distinctive cape with a large
pointed hood called a “chilaba”, and the “djellabah”,
a calf-length overcoat striped in tribal colours.
Uniforms used to be lentil coloured, with some pieces in
greenish-tinged khaki or native colors (eg brown with white
stripes). Shirts used to be cream coloured (linen color). |
